Abstract
In previous chapters, we summarized studies showing the beneficial effects of isofalvones on human health and on the prevention of human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms and menstrual cycles in women, thyroid problems, memory and learning disability, problems in brain development, Alzheimer's disease, obesity, reproductive problems, bone density issues, diabetes, immunity deficiency, and so on. In addition, the therapeutic and anticancer functions of soybean have also been attributed to bioactive peptides such as lunasin and BBI (Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor) found both in seed protein and gastrointestinal digestive tract. In this chapter, we summarize the anticancer properties of soybean seed peptides such as BBI and lunasin, current understanding of their genetic inheritance, and molecular analysis and quantification of lunasin in soybean seeds. Currently, we are investigating the QTN (quantitative trait nucleotide) mapping of seed lunasin content in our department using multi-locus genome wide association (GWAS) approach. These studies will help in developing soybean lines with high seed lunasin content in the future.
