Abstract

In the present work, 4% tensile deformation was applied to Ti 51.5Ni48.5 melt-spun ribbons at room temperature (lower than the martensite finish temperature) and at 420 K (higher than the austenite finish temperature), respectively, and the effect of deformation on the martensitic transformation was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements show that the phase transition temperatures change slightly with deformation at 420 K. While in the case of deformation at room temperature, the back transition temperatures strikingly increase 18 K, which is mainly attributed to the formation of high-density dislocations based on the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations. It is observed that the Ti2Ni particles severely impede the dislocations during the deformation process. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
