A Descriptive Study of Diversification Efforts at Selected Postsecondary Education Institutions in North Carolina
Abstract
The purpose of this research study was to use quantitative measures to describe the strength of a relationship between race, cultural intelligence, and familiarity with selected court litigation of administrators as these factors related to the perceived importance of racial diversification efforts at selected postsecondary education institutions in North Carolina. Of the 169 respondents, the sample was highly skewed with more than 70% categorized as White. Neither race nor familiarity with selected court litigation was found to be statistically significant in their relationship with an effort to diversify. However, the findings revealed at least two significant implications. First, the level of importance of racial diversification perceived by administrators in the sample was evenly distributed across all races. This is significant because the finding implies that race did not factor into how important the respondents perceived the need to exert efforts toward racially diversifying their campuses. Second, the conceptual ordered logistic regression model was statistically significant. In particular, for a one-unit increase in cultural intelligence, the expected odds of respondents changing their response to a higher level of importance of diversifying their campuses based on race were 2.123 times greater when holding the other predictors constant. The results of the analysis showed that the importance attributed to racial diversification efforts at selected postsecondary education institutions might be addressed as a function of the administrators' perceived level of cultural intelligence. In addition to extending prior educational research, the findings illuminate a potential need for future research related to cultural intelligence as it might relate to the attitudes of postsecondary education administrators.
