High School Males' Perceptions of Variables Related to Reactive Attachment Disorder and Their Teachers' Perceptions of Cultural Capital in an Alternative School Setting

Abstract

This study examined high school males' perceptions of variables related to Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) in a selected Performance Learning Center (PLC). Selected literature cites educational experience. attendance, socioeconomic status. academic competence, and discipline as common indicators that a student will leave school prematurely; however. educational experience is identified as having the greatest influence toward hindering graduation. With limited research on the effectiveness of alternative schools and their impact on increasing the graduation rate of male students, this research utilized a mixed methodological sequential approach to examine the prevalence and confidence level of characteristics of RAD in males and their educational experience. RAD is characterized by markedly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate social relatedness. The participants, male students 18 - 21 years of age who were 9th throughl2th graders, were administered the T-BRADSI Survey Inventory to examine the potential presence of characteristics of RAD and selected PLC teachers participated in electronic interview questionnaires to further examine findings from the descriptive statistical analyses of the T-BRADSI Survey Inventory. The T-BRADSI Survey Inventory is an objective inventory of RAD symptoms. Additionally, cultural capital served as a conceptual framework for the interview protocol and analysis of findings. The research findings included correlation analyses and factor analyses that were statistically significant. Selected findings may explain characteristics from the T-BRADSI Survey Inventory which may provide clues for some of the discontent male students may have developed throughout life. The teachers in the setting reported that cultural capital was an observed phenomena for males in the selected PLC.
