Examining Possible Relationships Between Parent Satisfaction, Select Types of School Contact, and Grades for African American High School Students

Deborah L Givens, Fayetteville State University

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to determine possible correlations between various types and frequency of parental involvement and student perceptions of school, student grades, and parent perceptions of school staff. The research design for this study was a secondary data analysis utilizing data from the 2016 Parent and Family Involvement in Education Survey of the National Center for Education Statistics. In this study, the relationship between parents’ attitudes towards school and the student’s enjoyment of school, parents receiving phone calls, the student's grades, parent satisfaction with school staff/interaction, and parents attending parent-teacher conferences served as the variables which defined aspects of parental involvement.Even though African American parents participated at varying degrees, the results concluded that many parents of African American public high school students reported that their examples and attitudes towards education at home influenced their student’s enjoyment of school. The findings of this study resolved that the parents of African American public high school students received more phone calls from teachers when their student’s grades declined and received fewer phone calls when grades were high. Also, the outcome of this study revealed the importance of parental satisfaction with schools. When African American parents were not satisfied with the interaction they had with school staff, then they felt their parental involvement endeavors, such as attending a Parent-Teacher Conference, were a waste of time.Guidelines are listed in this study to assist school staff in implementing and maintaining the kind of parental satisfaction that encourages parental involvement and the academic success the parents and the school staff wish to see.
