Abstract

The corrective and preventive action process is the most important component of a quality assurance program. Without an effective corrective and preventive action (CPA) program, problems will repeat themselves, continuous improvement will be difficult and it is unlikely that any of the other quality system elements will work effectively. Despite advances in the design and implementation of decision support systems (DSS) and rapid changes in Information Technology (IT) capabilities, it is still a challenge to provide effective DSS for strategic decisions, such as preventive actions in a quality management system (QMS). Much of the challenge arises from the complex nature of the corrective and preventive decision-making process itself, and from the accompanying encumbrances that it brings to DSS design and delivery. We describe the design and implementation of a CPA knowledge-based decision support system for QMS in the car design industry. The proposed system has been validated using a scenario.
