Abstract

Two mathematical models for the Cumberland County (N.C.) EMS system are developed to determine the optimum locations for a given number of ambulances while achieving an eight minute response to emergency calls. Model I demonstrates that with the existing six ambulances and eight sites, coverage can be increased from 70 to 76 percent by relocating one ambulance. Further, given the existing facility locations, the maximum coverage is 85.64 percent. Model II considers the impact of additional facility sites and shows that the target of 90% coverage can be attained with eight facilities and nine ambulances. It also reveals that additional coverage can be more efficiently achieved by increasing the number of vehicles rather than the number of sites.
