Abstract
The human misery that exists in rural regions of Sub-Saharan Africa is a complex phenomenon with many causations and consequences that reinforce each other. This articles seeks to examine the many salient features of the Nigerian rural economy, and the role that rural-based Community Banks should take and are already taking to achieve rural development. This article notes that the key aims of establishing a community bank are to promote rural development through the provision of finance and banking services. As such, a need arises for actions that will remedy the deficiencies. These deficiencies call for increased monitoring and supervision to ensure adequate internal control within the community banks.
