Abstract

This chapter provides innovative strategies for the recruitment and retention of Black men in research, such as the “For Me Like Me” recruitment technique that provide creative steps to address the cultural competency challenges faced by many researchers when attempting to engage Black men in research. It introduces other innovative concepts to engage Black men in research, such as innovative tailored-recruitment interventions (iTRI), intentional tailored-research techniques (ITT), and personalized innovative comprehensive (PIC) techniques. It provides examples of how to successfully employ them when engaging Black men in research and outlines successful strategies employed by the Men of Color Health Awareness (MOCHA) project. This chapter further provides a review of the history of people of color and their experiences engaging in research with a specific focus on Black men and highlights barriers such as mistrust of the system based on historical medical abuses, time concerns that prevent participation, and the lack of cultural competency of researchers that negatively affect their participation in research.
