Abstract
Pierre Janet, French psychologist and psychiatrist, was among the first to develop a dynamic psychology using the concepts of subconscious ideas and psychological force. Janet contributed to the understanding of hysteria and of obsessive-compulsive disorders through his theories of dissociation and psychasthenia. His etiology of mental illness stressed both constitutional weakness and the role of traumatic memories. His method, 'psychological analysis,' moved beyond an early reliance on hypnotherapy to include intensive case study and the recovery of dissociated traumatic memories. In many ways, Janet can be ranked with Sigmund Freud as one of the great systematic thinkers in the history of psychology.
