Abstract
Investigates the effect of development on the status of women across districts in Iran, conceptualized through a focus on gender inequality and measured by women's relative access to valued resources. The pattern of variation of the relative access of women to resources in the communities is analyzed and described. It is found that development improves the relative access of women to some resources such as education and health services, but it does not change the situation of women with respect to income-generating activities. The findings are discussed in terms of the multi-dimensionality of the status of women and the differential effect of development on each dimension in the Iranian socio-cultural system. -Author
