Abstract

This chapter will address the challenges as well as the solutions for addressing multiculturalism in human services. Multiculturalism in this context consists of the view that cultures, races, and ethnicities deserve special acknowledgment of their differences within a dominant political culture. Given the current times in which we live, it is apparent that human services agencies need to become more multicultural to adequately address the needs of diverse and marginalized people. This need is evident given the increases in populations of color, people who are elderly, people with sexual orientation differences, and people with disabilities; the widening income gap; and the dismantling of the public welfare sector. One of the challenges is the need for human services administrators to contend with greater gender, race, and age diversity in the service workforce. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, James C.
