Abstract
Reports about the rates of suicide in the United States have continued to indicate an increase in the recent years and this has resulted in more studies being conducted on the subject. A majority of these studies however have mainly focused on risk factors. While the awareness of risk factors is important, a concern with this strategy is that it focuses on negative processes. The identification of protective factors is also crucial, and many organizations promoting suicide prevention have started to highlight them in addition to the risk factors and warning signs. Since the information on the risk factors is well covered in other parts of this book, this chapter focuses on highlighting the protective factors for suicide. The discussion also shows how these protective factors also interact with risk factors to provide a buffering effect, thus preventing suicide. A further discussion on prevention in at-risk groups is conducted.
